To follow one's own genealogical tree is a complex work... And as with all complex work, it changes ourselves while we do it.

One starts by curiosity, and sip by sip, reads about history more than in all their College years, but more interested... since he is reading about his own family... as through them, his nation and world...

As I advanced on it, I was realizing that what constitutes the essence of a nation, a people, a clan or a family, is not its race or idiom.

Is its shared experience, what it constitutes its culture, its history and its myths. Is what they share and give themselves its identity.

And I discovered that this common experience it is not made of cold dates, but the tradition of their ancestors, their chiefs, their artists and their warriors... It is made of the emotions and lives as men and women of flesh and blood they were, the same as us.

I say myths, because those are not only the tales of times impossibly far distant, or the improbable prowess of giants...

I say myths because as far as we move back in the history searching with scientific exactitude the name or the date, we realize that each time it is more difficult to find confident registers, but instead, they become outstanding as the legends of our ancestors, that as they lived lives like ours, their acts were enlarged or diminished in proportions marked by the passions, nobilities and prejudices of their times... and they only could be observed in the same entourage, never judged with different measure, if we wish not to be judged the same way, one day...

All this is what it converts with the time in myth, legend... in the pride of families and culture of the nations.
It is something undefined... but that marks babies in the cradles and men at the bridle of the goverments.
There is no man, family or nation without them, no matter how you name it.
The story of these men and women that preceded us, is deeply in our blood and our education, far more than we can believe it, letting us have a lot less space and liberty than we wish to believe that we have, in fact...
And I realized that despite the exactitude we try to have in all our work, trying to be the more exact  and serious, the fact of a date more or less precise, loses personal importance in the face of the evidence that all of  them had left their blood, their habits, their fears and their fantasies, in which ones raised us, and transmitted it to us...

We can fight to preserve this inheritance, support and transmit it, if we like it.

We can fight to tear off from our skin, bury, and forget it, if we dont like it.

What we can't do is ignore it, because this would remove from us the freedom to choose... turning us into puppets of genes and habits, without the knowledge of it.

We have to continue this search, because this is a search into ourselves...
