I found them living at Croftside, Hoddam Dumfries. Margaret was married to Thomas Dobie, also a farmer (66 acres) Thomas Dobie was age 60 on the census, and born in Applegarth. they had 7 children, Thomas, (26) who I have already mentioned, the eldest was David (28) Esther (24) Mary (22) James (19) George (17) all these children were born in Dryfesdale, then the last child on the list is William he is 15 and was born in Hoddam. all children were employed on their fathers farm.

I shall leave you to digest all this, and I shall get back in a few days to tell you what I can find out about the Charteris branch of the family, I did have a quick look and found 40 Charteris in the Dumfries area.

Now lets look at the Dobie family.

Margaret Patterson married Thomas Dobie 21 Dec 1851 at Applegarth, Dumfries.

Thomas was born 22 Jan 1820 at Applegarth, his parents were George Dobie and Mary Wilson. Thomas and Margaret have 7 children so far.
